In the heart of Tlaquepaque, Mexico, art and craftsmanship are woven into the town’s essence. Every street, shop, and corner holds a story, sparking curiosity and igniting creativity in anyone who visits.
“What are you hoping to find?” my guide asked as we wandered the cobblestone streets. With only a few hours to explore, I answered. “I want to see it all, but let’s focus on the local art scene and stunning architectural details.
Our journey led us to the studio and shop of the talented local artist JJ Marquín. I was enthralled when I stepped through his studio’s vibrant purple double doors. Inside, a treasure trove of creativity awaited. Beautifully designed vases, whimsical papier-mâché figures, and unique artwork filled the space, each piece brimming with originality and passion. It was impossible not to feel inspired by the vibrant energy of his work.
Tlaquepaque isn’t just a destination—it’s an experience. Beyond JJ Marquín’s studio, neighbours showcase old ovens repurposed into art installations. There are also innovative designs like custom clothing lines and colourful street art that breathe life into every corner.

While exploring Tlaquepaque, I had the opportunity to visit the Pantaléon Panduro Museum of the National Ceramics Contest. It’s housed in a historic orphanage. This remarkable space is a testament to the artistry and cultural heritage of the region.
The museum’s corridors are adorned with unique works of art, each masterpiece taking approximately a year to create. The intricate details of the miniatures were beyond anything I could have imagined. I wouldn’t have believed such precision was possible without seeing it firsthand.
One room features a stunning mural, adding beauty to the space. Other displays showcase exceptional ceramic works, enhancing the experience. The building tells a story, with tall ceilings in some areas and warm, weathered walls in others. It reflects the age and character of what was once a bustling orphanage.
This blend of art, history, and architecture made visiting the museum an unforgettable experience. It offered a glimpse into the past and showcased the incredible talent of local artists.

A Culinary Delight in Tlaquepaque, Mexico
Tlaquepaque is a food lover’s paradise, with restaurants and cafés on nearly every block. Each eatery seems to outdo the next in décor. They create some of the most inviting spaces I’ve seen while travelling. The vibrant, welcoming atmosphere keeps customers coming back and makes these spots incredibly Instagram-worthy. No wonder they’re all over social media, attracting even more curious foodies.
During my visit, I was so excited about lunch that I forgot to photograph my flavorful flank steak. Paired with freshly made guacamole. This dish has been a favourite since my last trip to Mexico—and it didn’t disappoint!
Of course, no meal in Tlaquepaque would be complete without a tequila cocktail to start the afternoon. Sharing the meal with great company makes it even more special, creating an unforgettable dining experience!
Tlaquepaque’s art and architecture are a stunning feast for the eyes. Every meal beautifully celebrates flavour and culture.
Conclusion: A Perfect Day in Tlaquepaque
Our day exploring the Tlaquepaque art and shopping district, just 30 minutes from Guadalajara’s city center, was terrific. Known as the hub for handicraft art, Tlaquepaque is a haven for creativity and culture.
I didn’t get to visit the blown glass workshops. I also missed stepping inside some of the oldest buildings. I’m sure I’ll return to uncover more of its charm.
How I Got Here
Starting in Ottawa, I drove to Toronto and stayed at the conveniently located Alt Hotel. It is next to the airport and has rail access to and from it. From there, I hopped on Flair Airlines’ new direct flight to Guadalajara—just $160 each way. In five hours, I arrived at Guadalajara International Airport, which is undergoing exciting expansions. With everything so easily accessible, this dream vacation came to life effortlessly.
