As you browse through the images, you’ll witness the serendipity we encountered and the diligent efforts of the locals, all of which contribute to showcasing a province reliant on its residents for self-promotion.

With just over 520,000 residents spread across two distinct areas, Newfoundland, along with the beauty of Labrador (a destination still on my list), leaves an unforgettable impression. But let’s delve into our adventure; our first stop was in Quidi Vidi, nestled in the distinctive St. John’s!

My top photography area is Quidi Vidi Village!

My top pick for photography is Quidi Vidi Village!

Quidi Vidi holds a special place in my heart and is always my first stop in St. John’s. The area exudes undeniable magic, making exploration incredibly exciting. The hiking trails from the village to Signal Hill offer refreshing viewpoints guaranteed to thrill.

Furthermore, as you climb the opposite side, you’ll truly appreciate the immense beauty of the bay, the village, and everything in between. It’s an adventure not to be missed! Here are three compelling reasons to visit Quidi Vidi beyond photography:

Why Quidi Vidi?

  1. Charming Fishing Village: Immerse yourself in the charm of a traditional fishing village, where colourful houses reflect rich maritime heritage.
  2. Quidi Vidi Brewery: Indulge in exceptional flavours at Quidi Vidi Brewery, renowned for its locally brewed craft beers with unique and delicious tastes.
  3. Signal Hill Connection: Embark on a scenic journey from the village to Signal Hill via hiking trails, offering breathtaking views of both land and sea.

After our fantastic time in Quidi Vidi, we explored St. John’s and discovered some hidden gems. We savoured the culinary delights at VU Restaurant and Bar and lunch at Blue On Water Restaurant and Inn and enjoyed a comfortable stay at the modern Double Tree Hotel. Of course, St. John’s vibrant Jelly Bean row houses were a must-stop for photographs.

Cape Spear with Parks Canada

Next, we ventured to Cape Spear, a stunning spot that boasts whales, birds, a lighthouse, and even ice cream. It is yet another jewel under the care of Parks Canada. Tourist information and restrooms are conveniently available, but remember there are many stairs!
Check in with the locals for the latest whale sightings at Cape Spear. They are your best resource, keeping a keen eye on the community’s whale activity!

Bay Bulls, Gatherall Tours

Bay Bulls, another unique village, captured our hearts with its quaint fishing charm and warm locals. Aboard Gatherall Tours, we embarked on a memorable whale and puffin-watching experience, accompanied by lively entertainment from the Gatherall boat entertainment.

Avalon region

After a day on the water, we explored the coastal wonders of the Avalon Peninsula, with the Avalon Inn providing a comfortable base for our adventures. Despite encountering heat waves and fog, we managed to tick off our must-see list, encountering more whale tails and wildlife while soaking in the beauty of the Avalon.

Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve

Despite the challenges of fog, I eagerly anticipate returning to Cape Sainte Mary Sanctuary. Navigating through such conditions adds an extra layer of excitement for photographers. I highly recommend the sanctuary for birdwatching enthusiasts.

During our visit, we spent two nights at The Wilds Resorts’ stunning golf course. Golf fanatics will delight in the spacious rooms, patio with BBQ, and convenient proximity to the golf course. It’s truly a golfer’s paradise!

During our last few days, we went to Trinity; we stopped briefly at Three Sisters Pub, a seasonal charmingly eclectic hidden gem that came highly recommended—and rightfully so! Unfortunately, we were so engrossed in enjoying the delicious food that we forgot to snap photos.

Trinity, with Trinity Eco Tours

Trinity, NL, is a three-hour drive from St. John’s, a place I frequently revisit due to its easy connection to the eastern shores. Nearby locations include Port Rexton, Elliston, and Bonavista.

Trinity is where you’ll find Trinity Echo Tours, run by Skipper Bob. I first met Bob five years ago, and since then, we’ve developed a close friendship. I make it a point to visit his Inn and go on whale tours yearly.

I was fortunate to witness my first and last breached whale during my stay. I was filled with childlike excitement on both occasions, too captivated to raise my camera. My favourite spot at the Inn is the top-floor room, which boasts breathtaking views of the bay, ocean, and distant lighthouse.

Waking up to such a scene, accompanied by the scent of the ocean and freshly brewed coffee, is simply unbeatable!
Calling all photographers: In recent years, Trinity has become a hotspot for sightings of the Stellar Eagle. If you’re eager to catch a glimpse, Bob will guide you to this majestic bird!

Elliston Geo Park

Elliston boasts one of the largest puffin colonies, and I’m tempted to make it my permanent home. Perched on the cliff’s edge, surrounded by fresh sea air, and with the delightful company of these charming little birds, it’s a paradise for bird enthusiasts. This spot is a must-visit for anyone seeking to capture adorable puffin images.
Aren’t they just adorable?

Returning to Newfoundland and Labrador each year fills me with joy, thanks to the warm and welcoming locals who make every visit unique. I eagerly anticipate my next adventure in this captivating region.

I can’t wait to visit again.
