Leaving Paris: A Bittersweet Goodbye

Saying goodbye to Paris was bittersweet, but the anticipation of finally visiting this long-awaited bucket-list destination filled me with excitement. This trip was extra special—it marked my first father-daughter adventure, a journey that would create lifelong memories.

Mont St. Michel is just a five-hour journey via Rail Europe, making it an easy and accessible getaway. You can book your trip through the link!

A Dream Realized: Arriving at Mont St. Michel

Mont St. Michel has always fascinated me—its dramatic tides, historic architecture, and breathtaking landscapes have fascinated me for years. We took a beautiful train ride from Paris to Rennes as we enjoyed the landscapes. Once in Pontorson, we hopped on a local bus for the final leg of our journey.

Then, the magic happened.

As the silhouette emerged on the horizon, I felt like stepping into a painting. The sight was breathtaking, and I knew this would be an unforgettable experience.

We opted for a one-day visit, which was a bit of a gamble when hoping to witness high tide. But the risk paid off—this first father-daughter trip was already proving to be one for the books.

Getting Around: Transportation Tips for Visitors

Navigating Mont St. Michel is an adventure in itself! Here are some essential travel tips to make your visit smoother:

🔹 Pack Light: The medieval streets and endless staircases make rolling suitcases impractical. A backpack is your best bet!

🔹 Shuttle Service: A free shuttle runs from the train station’s parking lot in Pontorson to the island. This makes it a convenient choice.

🔹Bring your camera: The views are irresistible. The architectural details are impeccable. You will want to capture every inch of it.

🔹 Scenic Walking Path: If you prefer a stunning approach, take the pedestrian bridge and soak in the breathtaking views.

The Staircase Struggle: A Humorous Mont St. Michel Adventure

I knew there were stairs, but I didn’t realize how many. The climb was relentless, and we quickly realized that some well-timed breaks were necessary. The majestic landscapes that you discover from the top are impeccable.

One such break involved ice cream- the perfect treat—until disaster struck.

As I took a bite, the ice cream somehow ended up all over my camera. Every button was covered in vanilla, and my hands were sticky. Thankfully, my daughter was there to save the day (and my camera).

Lesson learned: The ascent to the abbey is a workout, so take your time. Arrive early for the best experience—fewer crowds mean better photo opportunities. And once you’ve conquered the climb, treat yourself to some retail therapy on the way down!

Unveiling Mont St. Michel: A Moment of Pure Excitement

The moment I had been waiting for arrived—the first full view of the majestic landscape of Mont St. Michel as it appeared from behind the trees.

Even from a kilometre away, its grandeur was undeniable. We stepped off the bus, and there it was—rising from the landscape like a medieval fortress frozen in time.

Fun fact: While Mont St. Michel feels like its own world, it’s tiny, with about 50 residents. Most buildings now serve as hotels, restaurants, and shops, yet the island’s history is still alive in every stone.

Originally named Mont-Tombe, the island was renamed Mont St. Michel in the 8th century when St. Aubert, the Bishop of Avranches, built an oratory here after a vision of the Archangel Michael.

Capturing the Magic: Award-Winning Photography

As a travel photographer, Mont St. Michel was a dream come true—the changing light, dramatic skies, and medieval architecture created endless photographic opportunities.

I’m honoured to share some exciting news. One of my photos from this trip received an award. It was named the Top Travel Media Association of Canada’s Photo of the Year for 2024. Moments like this remind me why I love what I do—capturing the magic of places that inspire the world.

Where We Stayed: A Hidden Gem in Normandy

Our accommodation in Pontorson, a charming Normandy village, was a great choice. The town’s architectural details and quiet charm made for a lovely place to unwind after exploring.

Arriving via Rail Europe was seamless. From the train station, we took a budget-friendly bus (only €4 per person) directly to Ponterson.

We might have stayed even closer if we had known beforehand. Staying on or near the island lets you visit Mont St. Michel until 11 p.m. This is a valuable lesson in researching your destination ahead of time!

A Journey to Remember

This father-daughter trip to Mont St. Michel was more than travel—it was about creating cherished memories while exploring one of France’s most breathtaking destinations.

Whether you visit for the place’s history, photography, or sheer magic, Mont St. Michel is an unforgettable adventure.
