Arrival in Istanbul: From Flight Fatigue to Taksim Square Exploration
After a gruelling 13-hour flight, we finally touched Istanbul, eager to immerse ourselves in its vibrant charm. At our cozy 3-star hotel, the concierge greeted us warmly. He offered recommendations on must-see spots like Taksim Square and a nearby grocery store for essentials. Without wasting time, we headed straight to Taksim Square—the heart of modern Istanbul.
As night fell, the city’s dynamic energy swept over us. Bustling markets came alive with chatter, and the colourful flowers adorning Taksim Square added a magical touch. The tempting aromas of roasted nuts and corn filled the air, but the glistening, syrupy baklava caught my eye. We felt travel fatigue, but the warmth of the locals uplifted us. Their lively atmosphere set the perfect tone for the adventure ahead.

Day 1 Evening: Exploring Istanbul’s Streets and Culinary Delights
Equipped with a map from our hotel, we ventured into Istanbul’s maze-like streets, eager to experience its authentic charm. We found a cozy local restaurant. We savoured our first meal in the city there. It was a delicious introduction to Istanbul’s renowned food scene.
Travel Tip:
Always ask your hotel for local restaurant recommendations! Hidden gems are often frequented by locals but not widely advertised. These places offer an authentic taste of the city and better prices than tourist traps.

Day 2: Baklava Temptations and Waterfront Explorations
Our morning began with a savoury shawarma sandwich—a delightful twist on the ones back home. Crispy French fries were tucked inside, and sauces were chilled unless requested. At just $4.00, it was an unbeatable deal. We couldn’t hold back. We indulged in a few syrupy bites of baklava. Then we set off toward the Galata Bridge.
The Galata Bridge was alive with activity—fishermen lined the railings while vendors roamed, selling trays of fresh simit. Below, waterfront restaurants catered to every craving, offering everything from Turkish tea to fresh seafood. Above, the constant buzz of traffic and pedestrians provided an immersive glimpse into Istanbul’s daily life.

Day 3: The Vibrant Saturday Markets of Istanbul
Istanbul’s Saturday markets are a feast for the senses—vibrant stalls, lively haggling, and endless goods. By afternoon, the crowds dissipated, revealing a quieter side of the markets. A local vendor shared a fascinating insight. He explained that Saturday was the primary shopping day. Many people buy goods to resell in small towns outside the city. It was fascinating to witness the pulse of local commerce in action.

Day 4: A Grand Bazaar Adventure
No visit to Istanbul is finished without experiencing the Grand Bazaar. Stepping inside, I was instantly mesmerized by the kaleidoscope of colours and the enticing aroma of spices. The lamp section, in particular, was pure magic. Glowing orbs of every hue hung from the ceilings, illuminating the market’s enchanting atmosphere.
Shopping here felt like an adventure; even before leaving, I was already dreaming of my next visit. The Grand Bazaar is truly a treasure trove of Istanbul’s vibrant spirit.

Day 5: Istanbul’s Iconic Mosques – A Journey Through History
Our hop-on-hop-off tour took us to one of Istanbul’s most awe-inspiring landmarks: the Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii). Witnessing its grandeur during the tranquil blue hour at night was magical.
Three Must-See Mosques in Istanbul:
- Sultanahmet Camii (Blue Mosque) – A masterpiece of Ottoman architecture.
- Süleymaniye Mosque – Offering breathtaking city views.

Tips for Visiting Istanbul’s Mosques:

Visiting Istanbul’s mosques is more than sightseeing—it’s an immersion into the city’s cultural and spiritual history.

Day 6: Discovering IstanIstanbul’sen Treasures – The Basilica Cistern
We stumbled upon a hidden gem in the heart of Istanbul. It was a tranquil courtyard featuring a charming café, a shisha bar, and even a small cemetery. It was a fascinating microcosm of the city’s diversity.
Our next stop took us underground to the breathtaking Basilica Cistern. With its towering columns and mysterious Medusa Heads, this ancient marvel felt like stepping into another world. While my photography skills could not capture its grandeur, the experience left a lasting impression.
