Ottawa Layover Guide: How to Enjoy Canada’s Capital Winters

The winter scenery in Ottawa for my Ottawa Layover Guide

My Ottawa Layover Guide exists for one reason: to crush the myth that Ottawa is a sleepy government town with nothing going on. Locals know that’s outdated. The city is layered, active, creative, and full of culture. From skating the canal and exploring museums to grabbing shawarma or wandering the ByWard Market, this winter layover gives you just enough of Ottawa to make you want more.

 Behind the Scenes

A behind-the-scenes clip from my shoot inside Notre-Dame Basilica captures the moment Ottawa’s energy reveals itself — quiet from the outside, breathtaking within.

Where to Stay in Ottawa

Andaz Ottawa ByWard Market

Hotel Room at Andaz

My go-to. Rooftop patio, a fully licensed restaurant, and a hotel that proudly invests in Canadian craftsmanship. The rooms are styled with Canadian-made furniture and look out toward Parliament Hill or the ByWard Market. Sleek, modern, and genuinely warm.

AC Hotel Ottawa

The new kid on the block opened in June 2025. Large rooms, refined décor, and a standout staff who make the experience easy and enjoyable. Views face the Market and Parliament. Clean, elevated style without feeling corporate.

Morning — Notre-Dame Basilica & Downtown Wanderings

Your Ottawa Layover Guide should always begin with Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica. Its exterior is modest; its interior is pure theatre — vaulted ceilings, deep blue tones, gold details, and impeccable symmetry. Stop in the basement Café for a coffee and croissants.

I return often as an interior photographer, most recently to create images for my 12-month Notre-Dame calendar.

Fast History:
Built originally as a wooden church in 1832 (St. Jacques), later transformed into a French Gothic Revival masterpiece, and now a National Historic Site. The twin spires remain one of Ottawa’s most recognizable landmarks.

After your visit, explore the surrounding streets — Ottawa’s downtown core is compact, walkable, and full of architectural surprises.

Afternoon — Winter in Ottawa

Winter is where this city shines.

  • Rideau Canal — The must-do. Skate, stroll, or sip hot chocolate. Beavertails included.
  • City Hall Rink of Dreams — One of Ottawa’s most beloved rinks.
  • Rideau Hall rink — Historic and charming.
  • Walking trails — Snow-covered and peaceful throughout downtown and the river pathways.
  • Lansdowne — Indoor/outdoor markets, Ottawa 67’s junior hockey, local food, shops, and winter events.

Your Ottawa Layover Guide is not complete without at least one outdoor winter activity.

Evening — Indoor Fun & Local Eats

Escape Manor Lounge (Elgin Street)

Start with a cocktail, then head into the escape rooms or stay for the games — darts reimagined, bocce, giant Jenga, board games, and more. A perfect indoor evening.

Where to Eat

Ottawa is a city of neighbourhoods, each with strong food identities:

  • Chinatown — Authentic noodles and bold Asian flavours
  • Little Italy — Pasta, meatballs, and classic comfort dishes
  • ByWard Market & Elgin Street — Cafés, pubs, restaurants, late-night bites
  • East & West End — Independent, emerging gems

And this wouldn’t be an Ottawa Layover Guide without mentioning the city’s unofficial title: the shawarma capital of Canada.

Why I Love Ottawa

Ottawa rewards curiosity. It’s a city of contrasts — grand architecture paired with quiet local corners, a strong food scene you don’t expect, winter traditions that bring everyone outside, and a community that embraces creativity and culture. I love the way you can move from skating to cafés to galleries within minutes. Ottawa has heart, depth, and personality.
